Unique Virtual Analogue Synth is Usually an Oxymoron

Origin sounds like nothing else on the planet. It not only implements True Analog Emulation, a technology which accurately models analog synthesizers…”

Ok, ok, so maybe Arturia are doing something different here, but I remain unconvinced. It’s nice to see companies continue to build hardware synths coz I really like em, but dammit! How about doing something different? There are more than enough Virtual Analogue synths about already.

There are so many different forms of synthesis to be explored, yet here we are, with plastic emulations of all the old stuff. I don’t have a problem with VA synths, just the fact that it’s all most companies seem to build.

Here’s hoping we see some more interesting stuff at this year’s NAMM.

iPhone - Look, Don’t Buy It. OK?

OK, so it was almost inevitable that I’d post about the iPhone eventually. I really dig mobile phones. There is all sorts of interesting things you can do with them — for example taking a photo and uploading it to Flickr. So of course I’m really interested in it. I wouldn’t buy one sight unseen or without scrutinising any associated contracts, but I’m keen as mustard to have a play with one.

Following the news over the last week I’ve noticed the awful amounts of scorn and whinging generated by it’s announcement on Tuesday — well Wednesday night here is Australia.

Get a grip man. It’s just a phone. You don’t need one. No one is saying you have to buy one. No one is saying you have to buy it if you feel it’s too expensive. You don’t have to get it if it doesn’t have the features you want. If your existing phone already does what you need, shut up about it and just keep using that. It’s not a disaster if it’s unattractive to business. It’s just a phone.

That’s not to say these gripes aren’t legitimate, but I’m a bit perplexed as to why people take this personally and want to start flame-wars over it.

Everyone on the interwebnets take a deep breath… now relaaaaaaaaax.

I Just Finished Zelda - The Twilight Princess

Wow. What an awesome game. I’ve played quite a few of the Zelda games and this one is pretty close to being my favourite. I need to think about it a little, but I think Wind Waker is still the Zelda game I like the most. But that may change…

The most compelling part of the game for me was the plot. It wasn’t predictable, the dialog was actually very good and most importantly it had characters you could empathise with. I mean holy shit, this game actually had character development!

Despite obviously being a Gamecube Port — I played the Wii version — it looks absolutely fabulous. I couldn’t care about the amount of polygons or textures. All that matters is that the art was bang on.

The character design in particular is very good. Standouts are Midna and Ganonodorf.

I think I need to mull over it a little more, but as a whole this is a deeply impressive game. Seriously, if you’re a gamer you should check it out.
