Selling Consoles, HD & Blu-Ray *yawn*, Japanese Gamers

I’ve had a few thoughts lately. Amongst the media coverage of the games-market, there has been a few reoccurring themes popping up. I thought I might while away a little time by blethering on about my own thoughts. It’s what a weblog is for isn’t it?

The Wii is not in the same market as the other consoles
What? Well fuck me! What market are they in again? Coz the last time I checked, Nintendo are in the games market. Just like Sony and Microsoft. Different price-point, broader audience, but still, bloody, effing, g’damn games.

$1000AUD for a PS3 is worth it man — Blu-ray!
A format no one uses. Yay. This makes better games how? More disk-space means more room for cut-scenes in Final Fantasy! *yawn*. Since it’s adding so much more to the cost of the system, I think Sony should try a bit harder justifying it. From here it just looks like them pushing another format no-one cares about.

YAY! HD!
How many people do you know with a High Definition TV? How many play games? How many gamers to you think can afford to buy a HD-TV? Not many my friends. Buying a console because of HD is daft. It’s not a widespread or affordable technology. Most of the folks wearing the extra expense of HD won’t see it.

Sony are arrogant
With the whole pricing scheme and their CEO’s rather… antagonising comments, I’d agree. They are.

Japanese people are like… nationalists or something
This is because the Xbox 360 isn’t doing well in Japan. You see the thinking is, Japanese punters don’t want it because MS is an American company. Yeh, you see in between buying Levi Jeans, eating McDonalds and listening to all that American music, Japanese folk decided to take time out and purposely not buy an Xbox, coz y’know, America… ick.

Obviously a load of shit. The 360 is failing because there are no games for the Japanese market. They’re a different audience with different tastes. Microsoft fucked up because they forgot to consider that. There is a fundamental truth in this; games sell consoles.
